"To survive, we had to eat shoot palm trees and lizard meat.," said Alif, Thursday (03/10/2013).

Hal itu, dilakukan lantaran mereka sudah tidak menerima gaji selama dua minggu terakhir.
Menurut para pekerja, mereka terpaksa memakan binatang tersebut guna menyambung nyawa dan mendapatkan energi untuk bisa tetap bekerja. Dengan begitu, mereka berharap pihak kontraktor bisa membayarkan tunggakan gaji.
Namun, harapan para buruh itu sia-sia, sebab pihak perusahaan yang memperkerjakan tidak juga memberikan apa hak mereka.
Puncaknya, Kamis (3/10/2013), pekerja yang berjumlah 40 orang itu melakukan unjuk rasa dengan membakar sebuah pondok di lokasi proyek yang difungsikan sebagai kantor. Mereka juga membuat testimoni pada sejumlah papan dan triplek untuk memprotes kebijakan perusahaan yang memperkerjakan mereka.
M Alif, seorang pekerja, mengatakan mereka menggelar aksi protes karena tak lagi diperlakukan secara manusiawi.
"Untuk tetap bertahan, kami terpaksa makan umbut pohon sawit dan daging biawak. Kalau tidak seperti itu, maka kami akan mati kelaparan," kata Alif, Kamis (3/10/2013).
Beruntung, umbut pohon sawit itu masih bisa dimakan. Mereka juga mengakui, rasa umbut pohon sawit tidak jauh berbeda dengan umbut bambu atau rebung.
"Kalau daging biawak, itu karena terpaksa. Rasanya tidak enak, tapi mau bagaimana lagi, perusahaan tidak memberikan gaji ataupun lauk untuk makan," tandas Alif.
