New Fish  Flasherwrasse Species Identified in NTT  , Indonesia

A new species of fish found in the coral reefs in the southwest Flores and Komodo National Park, NTT. Flasherwrasse  Fish of the species named Paracheilinus rennyae.

Fish with unique colors and rounded shapes on the dorsal fin, anal fin, and the tail is named for the contributions of scientific experts LIPI fish, Renny Kurnia Hadiaty. Renny is the curator of the fish collection at the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB), Zoology Division of Biology LIPI Research Center. During 27 years at the LIPI, Renny concentrate on Indonesian freshwater fish taxonomy.


The existence of this new species was published in the weekend edition of the journal Aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology. This discovery is the result of a joint research scientist Indonesian Biodiversity Research Center (a collaborative initiative of the University of Udayana in Bali, University of Papua in Manokwari, Diponegoro University in Semarang, and the University of California at Los Angeles) and Indonesia Conservation International .

Actually, Paracheilinus rennyae is 17th flasherwrasse species were identified. But genetically, this species differs from other species flasherwrasses is in the Coral Triangle. Paracheilinus angulatis closest relatives is
derived from East Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and the southern Philippines.


Flasherwrasse fish  favorite among divers and underwater photographers because blue and red color patterns are striking. These colors are only displayed as part of a mating ritual that occurred about an hour before sunset. At these hours, the male fish will usually appear brownish and show their brilliant colors it while upholding the fins. They will  swim short with an effort to lure  quickly  females.

Sebuah spesies baru ikan ditemukan di kawasan terumbu karang di barat daya Flores dan Taman Nasional Komodo, NTT. Ikan dari spesies flasherwrasse dinamai Paracheilinus rennyae.

Ikan dengan warna unik dan bentuk membulat di sirip punggung, sirip anal, serta ekor ini dinamai untuk menghargai kontribusi ilmiah ahli ikan LIPI, Renny Kurnia Hadiaty. Renny adalah kurator koleksi ikan di Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB), Divisi Zoologi dari Pusat Penelitian Biologi LIPI. Selama 27 tahun di LIPI,  Renny berkonsentrasi pada taksonomi ikan air tawar Indonesia.


Keberadaan spesies baru ini diumumkan dalam edisi akhir tahun jurnal Aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology. Penemuan ini adalah hasil penelitian gabungan dari ilmuwan Pusat Penelitian Keanekaragaman Hayati Indonesia (sebuah inisiatif kolaborasi dari Universitas Udayana di Bali, Universitas Negeri Papua di Manokwari, Universitas Diponegoro di Semarang, dan Universitas California di Los Angeles) dan Conservation International Indonesia.

Sebenarnya, Paracheilinus rennyae adalah spesies flasherwrasse ke-17 yang berhasil diidentifikasi. Namun secara genetik, spesies ini berbeda dari spesies-spesies flasherwrasses lain yang ada di Coral Triangle. Kerabat terdekatnya adalah Paracheilinus angulatis yang berasal dari Kalimantan Timur, Brunei, Sabah, dan Filipina selatan.
